PHILOSOPHY

Composition is the chance to bring stories to song. Commissions are a chance to make sure that a particular group of musicians can tell that story in a way best suited for them. Clinics are a chance for musicians and composer to collaborate on the telling of that story. Residency is a chance to extend that opportunity and deepen a musical relationship. Workshops break out of what we traditionally do in the music space, empowering musicians as creators. In every possibility is the opportunity to bring people together through new music.

Conductors need compositions for many reasons. There are several series to consider for conductors in the midst of programming. The Emerging Choir Series features music appropriate for new or developing musicians. The Global Voices Series goes beyond the cultural and linguistic norms of the Western Canon. These pieces might incorporate a text in a language other than English/German/French/Italian, celebrate a BIPOC or Non-Western poet, or honor the music of a culture outside of the Western music tradition. The Historic Voices Series honors composers and poets of the past. Some pieces were commissioned as a pairing with an historic work, while others feature the text of a historic poet.

OFFERINGS

  • Having the composer or arranger join your choir for a collaboration and coaching on the original music. This can also be a time for the composer to clinic and conduct other pieces on the program. These sessions can be done in person or via Zoom call.

  • For a choir, chamber ensemble, or singer looking for an original piece of music, a commission brings the chance to tailor your own musical story. Whether you have a text you are already passionate about, or prefer the composer to write an original text for the work. This can be combined with clinics (in person or via Zoom).

  • A chance to welcome the composer into rehearsal for one day, host the composer for multiple days, or welcome the composer to a premiere or performance of the work.

  • Workshops can flip the script, using songwriting as a tool to foster creativity in the classroom or ensemble. These workshops can be used to develop a commission as well.
